- Ex officio investigations for the anaesthesiologists and alleged readmissions to Turkey
By its decisions disclosed below, the Ombudsman launches today ex officio investigations on two issues: The first one concerns the alleged refusal of the anaesthesiologists serving at the General Hospital of Samos to be involved in pregnancy interruption procedures on the grounds of moral objections. The second one concerns the alleged irregular readmissions to Turkey by the Greek authorities, of Turkish citizens who enter Greece seeking international protection.From: The Greek Ombudsman -

- The Greek Ombudsman meets with counterparts in the Region
Ways of closer cooperation and enhanced coordination aiming at the improvement of human rights protection for migrants and refugees were the topic of discussions between the Greek Ombudsman and his counterparts from Turkey and Serbia as well as delegations from the Ombudsmen institutions of Kosovo and FYROM. The event was hosted by the Greek Parliament, in the presence of Vice-President Tasia Christodoulopoulou. A welcoming speech was also given by the FRONTEX officer responsible for the respect of human rights. - The Ombudsman before the Parliament for mobile telephony antennas
The Deputy Ombudsman of the Quality of Life Department Ioannis Sagias. addressed the Special Permanent Committee of the Parliament for environmental protection on Wednesday 17 May 2017, on the issue of “Examination of the framework for the installation of mobile telephony antennas” and referred to the relevant experience of the Independent Authority on the issue. The Deputy Ombudsman highlighted the need of due process and observation of the principle of precaution and called for improving the regulatory framework governing the installation and operation of mobile telephony antennas. He also stated the necessity for the competent ministries to undertake the legislative initiative to build a relationship of trust between the administration and the citizens on this issue, which is crucial for the quality of life but also for entrepreneurial activity.From: The Greek Ombudsman -

- Meeting with a delegation of the European Parliament
On 24 May 2017, the Ombudsman, accompanied by the Deputy of the Department of Children’s Rights and senior investigators, hosted a delegation of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) of the European Parliament. The Ombudsman presented the work of the Independent Authority and in particular its interventions concerning refugees and migrants arriving in Greece from Turkey. The MEPs shared with the Ombudsman their impressions from their visit in reception hotspots and detention centres for aliens in Lesvos and Kos, and called for their closer cooperation and communication with the Ombudsman, in particular as regards the management of migratory flows and refugee protection.From: The Greek Ombudsman -

- The Ombudsman at the meeting of the network of OPCAT National Preventive Mechanisms
«Treatment of the mentally-impaired individuals in detention» was the main topic of the meeting of the South-Eastern European Network of National Preventive Mechanisms under the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (OPCAT), organised by the Serbian Ombudsman in Belgrade on 25 & 26 May 2017. The Deputy Ombudsman responsible for Human Rights, Mr Nikolopoulos, participated on behalf of the Greek Ombudsman. Working groups developed specific issues of treatment of detainees with mental disorders by police, detention facilities, mental hospitals and welfare institutions.From: The Greek Ombudsman
