Calliope Spanou, Professor of Administrative Science - Public Administration
She was elected Ombudsman of Greece by the Parliament in May 2011 and took office on 13th July, 2011. She had already served as Deputy Ombudsman from 2003 to 2011.
She studied Public Law and Political Science at the University of Athens and Political Science - Administrative Science in France, University of Amiens (Doctorat d' Etat).
During her studies she was awarded scholarships by the M. Stassinopoulos Foundation (1982-83) and by the Ministry of National Economy Technical Cooperation Programme (ΝΑΤΟ) (1984-87). Her Doctorate dissertation was honoured by the French Government with a publishing allowance.
Since 1989 she has been teaching at the Faculty of Political Science and Public Administration of the University of Athens. She has also taught at the Universities of Amiens, Paris II and Versailles - Saint Quentin en Yvelines. She has been advisor of studies at the National Centre of Public Administration and has taught for many years at the National School of Public Administration. She cooperates with the OECD as an expert.
Her current research interests include public policy, civil service, citizen-administration relations and the Europeanization of public administration. She has published papers and books in Greek, French and English. Her recent books include:

She has been a member of the Steering Committee of the European Group of Public Administration (IIAS) and former president of the Hellenic Political Science Association.
