- The Ombudsman’s report on the EU Relocation programme for asylum seekers
The Greek Ombudsman published a report on the EU Relocation Programme for asylum seekers, on the occasion of the Regional Board of the International Ombudsman Institute (IOI) meeting in Athens on February 20, 2019. An assessment of the EU emergency measure of relocating asylum seekers form Greece to other Member-states was assigned to the Ombudsman by the IOI European Regional Board. Mr. Andreas Pottakis, participating in the Board, presented the report in their meeting in Brussels in October 2018 and also sent it to the Greek Minister for Migration, Dimitris Vitsas. -

- National Preventive Mechanism Against Torture and Ill-treatment - Annual Special Reports 2016 & 2017
In 2014, the Greek Ombudsman was appointed as the National Preventive Mechanism Against Torture and Ill-Treatment (OPCAT), ie the independent, national, monitoring body of the conditions in detention facilities. The OPCAT special reports of 2016 and 2017 not only accurately portray the existing conditions at the detention facilities, but also are the basis upon which any further effort to develop better conditions with respect for human rights can be organized. -

- “External monitoring on Forced Returns of 3rd country nationals and strengthening fundamental rights”
Conference on the external monitoring of FR and the strengthening of fundamental rights was organised by the Greek Ombudsman on Monday 26 November at the National Research Foundation (L. Vasileos Konstantinou 48). The conference, which was funded by the European Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF), presented the findings of the recently adopted Special Report of the Ombudsman on return of third country nationals for 2017. The report analyses the problems of forced return and readmission of 3rd country nationals to Turkey. At the European level, the Ombudsman expresses its concern about the declarations of effectiveness of the return system, if it is not accompanied by guarantees of fundamental rights.
