    - Meeting with a delegation of the European Parliament
    On 24 May 2017, the Ombudsman, accompanied by the Deputy of the Department of Children’s Rights and senior investigators, hosted a delegation of the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) of the European Parliament. The Ombudsman presented the work of the Independent Authority and in particular its interventions concerning refugees and migrants arriving in Greece from Turkey. The MEPs shared with the Ombudsman their impressions from their visit in reception hotspots and detention centres for aliens in Lesvos and Kos, and called for their closer cooperation and communication with the Ombudsman, in particular as regards the management of migratory flows and refugee protection.

    - The Ombudsman at the meeting of the network of OPCAT National Preventive Mechanisms
    «Treatment of the mentally-impaired individuals in detention» was the main topic of the meeting of the South-Eastern European Network of National Preventive Mechanisms under the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment (OPCAT), organised by the Serbian Ombudsman in Belgrade on 25 & 26 May 2017. The Deputy Ombudsman responsible for Human Rights, Mr Nikolopoulos, participated on behalf of the Greek Ombudsman. Working groups developed specific issues of treatment of detainees with mental disorders by police, detention facilities, mental hospitals and welfare institutions.

    - Safeguarding the rights of children in the process of family reunification and relocation
    The Ombudsman addressed a letter to the competent Greek authorities, containing its findings and proposals on family reunification and relocation of accompanied and unaccompanied minors. This initiative aims to pinpoint the difficulties and highlight the need for improvements in order to enhance legal and safe routes of accepting children in the EU Member States and reduce threats to their fundamental rights.

    - Visit from Legal Research Group students of the Athens Law School
    On Tuesday May 9th, members of the Legal Research Group of the Athens Law School visited the Ombudsman’s premises. The students were informed by the Ombudsman Andreas Pottakis on the competences and work of the Independent Authority. Subsequently the students conversed with the Senior Investigators on individual issues within the mandate of the Ombudsman, including special mandates.

    - International meeting in the Swedish Parliament on the rights of children in need of international protection
    The Position Statement on urging the EU institutions to respect the rights of the child in developing the new Common European Asylum System (CEAS) was adopted in Stockholm on 24 April 2017, in an international meeting at the Swedish Parliament, attended by the Greek Deputy Ombudsperson for the Rights of the Child Georgios Moschos. The meeting was co-organised by the Swedish Parliament, the Swedish Ombudsman for Children and the Institute for the Welfare of Children and was attended by the Swedish Minister for Children, representatives of the European Parliament, the European Commission, the Council of Europe and children’s rights organisations and ombudsmen of the Child from many European countries.
