The EUNOMIA Project started officially in January 2001, funded through an extraordinary financial contribution by the Greek government to the General Directorate of Human Rights of the Council of Europe. The aim of the project is to contribute to the creation and medium-term support for newly founded mediation institutions in the countries of South-eastern Europe.
Since early 2004 the EUNOMIA Project is run under the auspices of the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, to whom the Greek Government has entrusted the necessary funds. The yearly working programmes of the EUNOMIA Project are defined by a Steering Board. It is composed of the Greek Ombudsman, Mr. Yorgos Kaminis, the Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights, Mr. Thomas Hammarberg, and the European Ombudsman, Prof. Nikiforos Diamandouros.
The last programme activities took place in 2009.
